Odd With a Little Bit of Random

Jacie has had an eventful couple of days. She has a summer cold and that has made things a little difficult for her (especially in the breathing area...) We took her to the dunes on Sunday anyway and she had a great time. It was a hard climb- for everyone but especially her. She still does not use her knee correctly. The constant hyper-extension makes her sore in her feet, legs and back. It makes her stomach hurt as well. You would think that would help her to realize why she has to go to Physical Therapy. Nope. She is still fighting the therapist every step of the way. I have high hopes for the role of therapy in Jacie's improvement. I believe that she might be able to walk correctly in the future and it will take a lot of strain off of her body to do so. She is young enough and all of this is so very new to her that she doesn't get it.

I was talking to the librarian today. We were discussing how to get Jacie through the summer reading program. Reading is not something that she is interested in yet. I use the word yet because I believe that she and I can discover the value of it for her. It is one of my goals for her schooling in the fall. Priority #1: Discover the joy of reading. This is followed by Priority #2: Discover the joy of reading. Need I say more?

I do find that she still does not understand everything that is said to her. I cannot figure out if it is just her own disinterest, or if she really misses full conversations. Everything in her life is so very new. I know that it has been over a year but she is still new here. Last week, she and I left a friend's house and she seemed surprised that my friend was washing dishes.

"She wash dishes just like you ma?"

"Yes."

"Everyday?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"So that her family has clean plates and cups."

"Oh, I wonder."

This exchange made me really think that my inclination of Jacie being in the orphanage for most of her time in China and only being in a foster home in order to heal from her surgery was right. She still seems so surprised at the basic daily life things that we do. She often acts like she is just beginning to understand things. What an interesting place to be in- so much of her past is hidden. I would love nothing more than to be able to discuss it with someone who was there.

She pipes up with some of the strangest things verbally. On the way to the dunes we were laughing and joking around as a family and we said something about which she promptly misunderstood completely (without realizing it) and laughingly said, "The pig said to smell the pretty flowers."

This of course set us all rolling because it was so odd and out of context. I have to admit I have gotten used to the oddities from her. It makes us all laugh but I am certain that she doesn't realize before she opens her mouth that what she is thinking is a little weird. What a piece of work. I have said before, I wonder who we will laugh at when she figures all the language out...?

What a crazy ride we are on. The boys are walking through their teen years and all of the 'stuff' that brings and wrapped right in the throes of it is a crazy Chinese child who randomly joins conversations without any clue as to what is being said. Yeah, that makes sense to me.

I wouldn't have it any other way. If I were given just a couple of words to describe my family I would have to admit that we are all- odd with a little bit of random.
